About Younger People with Dementia (Berkshire) CIO
Who We Are:
Charity Younger People with Dementia (Berkshire) CIO is a regional charity, set up in 2012, with the aim of filling a much needed gap in provision for those living with young onset dementia (YOD).YOD affects adults between the ages of 30-64. Nationally there are about 42,500 people with YOD. Younger people with dementia and their carers have complex health and social needs and care is less likely to be as joined up as it is for older people, added to which loss of employment and potential family breakdown can have far-reaching effects.
What We Do:
We provide age-appropriate intervention, prevention, improved well-being and integration for those living with YOD. We do this through the provision of workshops and 1:1 support for people with YOD, thus enabling carers to gain valuable respite. We also provide Admiral Nurses for Carers of those with YOD, the first in the country of their kind. We provide education courses and have written a number of books, one of which is aimed at children aged 6-9 years to assist in explaining a diagnoses of dementia in their parent.
Why We Need You:
Whilst we receive funding through Clinical Commissioning Groups, this funding does not cover all of our costs. We therefore rely on grants, donations and fundraising to fill gaps in funding. Every pound raised by our supporters, therefore, means that we can make a difference to the lives of those living with YOD.
